Walking along Arashi Beach

I came across a tree growing out of the sand

A local told me that it had been there for hundreds of years

Withstanding every tropical storm

I sat beneath her branches and closed my eyes

We chatted for forty-seven minutes

She told me about her life

When she was small

Naïve

Weak

She cried for the future

And ached over the past

I asked her if she was happy

“Like religion,” she said, “the quest for happiness is a goal-driven distraction to keep us moving forward”

But that's precisely the point

Life

Motion

Change

She said

“It is only

And entirely

About growth”
